Varroa Mite National Management Group

Chair: Daniel Sorokin (dhs263@cornell.edu)

VICE CHAIR: TBD (TBD@cornell.edu)

Up to 20-25 delegates

The Varroa Mite National Management Group, consisting of Australia's top agricultural specialists, animal rights activists, and policymakers, is scheduled to convene in an urgent session. This critical meeting addresses the incursion of the invasive Varroa mite, a parasitic mite that has decimated honey bee populations worldwide, leading to severe repercussions for all of agricultural production. Historically, the Varroa mite has wreaked havoc across every continent besides Australia. But in June 2022, those mites arrived on Australian shores. Now, this group meets in June 2023 with the goal to draft a robust eradication and containment strategy to protect the country’s agricultural integrity and prevent a potential collapse of its ecosystem. This session is pivotal in shaping Australia's proactive measures against this invasive threat.
